The idea of forming a society for the promotion of concerts and other musical events was first envisaged as a Millennium project in 1998. It was not accepted as an official promotion and, indeed, the general feeling was that it would not succeed.
However, a determined small group of musical enthusiasts, many of whom still serve on the committee of the Society, decided to proceed with the idea and a programme of events was formulated. The Roseland Music Society was born.
Subsequently, a regular programme of concerts, presentations and other musical, social events have taken place which include male choirs, quartets, orchestras and numerous distinguished solo artists from around the country and abroad.
One of the aims of the Society is to bring affordable musical concerts to the local rural communities. Portscatho and Gerrans Memorial Hall and the United Church, both of which are central to the Roseland, are venues regularly used.
The Roseland Music Society is affiliated to the National Federation of Music Societies, and has a membership of over one hundred and forty. Membership, available at a very modest sum, entitles one to a reduction on ticket prices and a periodic newsletter giving advance notice of forthcoming concerts.
